Reading 2017 Term 1

Hi Guys Happy 2017,

This Year our topic is: Learn from a myth become a legend, and we have been making slides about the Ohaeaway path to learning based on Myth and Legends. We have slides to tell you guys what is a myth and what is a legend. I have been reading a Myth called The Ungrateful Tiger. It basically tells you that when someone helps you you have to be grateful not ungrateful. Here is a Graphic Organiser about the story. .Click on this to watch the story video

The story comes from a culture.
It has non-human characters like gods.
It can have some real characters like plants, humans and other animals.
It is set in a certain place.
It explains a certain phenomenon or says why things are the way they are.
The main parts of the story are:
Korean tale
Talking animals - oxen and tiger, hare. A talking tree.
Tiger, Hare, Tree,Oxen.
Forest or Jungle?
It tells you that if someone helps you, you have to be grateful for their help.
Tiger gets trapped in a hole. Human helps him. Tiger needs help promises he’ll be grateful as long as he helps him. Well the tiger was not grateful and decided he wanted to eat the innocent young man. The man stood up to the tiger and made a deal the other animals had to judge if the tiger could eat him. The tiger was winning and the tree voted for the tiger cause he thinks that humans cut them down. The Oxen voted for the tiger cause too many people treat them badly. Then the hare came and voted for the human. The human ran away and lived happily ever after.

Taupo Bay Recount

Kia ora
Here is the recount I wrote  for an eAsttle writing test in Week 4.  Our teacher marked all our recounts and gave us our scores. Mine came out at Level 3p which is just above the end of year standard for Year Five. I got the best score for using paragraphs and the worst scores for vocabulary and sentence structure.

We helped each other improve them by reading each other’s recount and talking about them. We also used Revision Assistant to help edit each other’s story and Mrs B added some notes as well. Everyone in our room likes Revision Assistant because it’s easy to understand the marks/ notes that it puts on your writing and so it’s quick for us to go and do the fix-ups. We have to get the spelling, grammar and punctuation really good before we are allowed to publish them here. I hope someone will give me some feedback.

“Wahoo!" I screamed. A couple of days ago, my family and I were preparing for a lovely caravan holiday for three nights at Taupo Bay.“ Mum, Dad, let’s go already.” I shouted.
“ Ok, Ok, Ok, we're coming.” Mum gasped. My family were all trying to get out the door. “Get in the car!” Dad yelled. I grabbed my bag and hopped in. My Mum and Dad came running out the door. My Dad turned on the car. We were all ready to hit the road. One hour later we arrived.

“Yes!!” I yelled. We had finally arrived at the campground.
“ Ok, guys. Let's put the awning up.” Dad said.  We grabbed the awning gear out of the caravan.
Then Kate and I wanted to go to the playground. “ Can we go to the playground Dad?.” Kate asked. “ Yeah I guess so.” Dad replied. We rushed over to it. Then up and down we went on the seesaw. The seesaw hurt our butts because the seat was wooden.

After that we visited our family friends who have a beach house in Taupo bay. We all wandered over there. “ Hello, come in, come in!” screeched Ange. We also saw other famillies at their beach house who we knew. I started to play bullrush with the kids. Charlie was in. He was 8 or 9 years old. He could not tackle anyone.  He was kind of bad at tackling. But we didn’t want to tell him because he would be sad and cry and walk away back to his batch. “ Bull rush!” he yelled. He did not get anyone for the 10th time. How bout the first person who Charlie touches is in with him?” Toby suggested. Everyone agreed. He touched Travis. Travis was now in with Charlie. Travis was a really good tackler. He got heaps of people. It was down to three people. Me, Lily, and Emma were the last three people. I was getting nervous.

But they all went for us one by one. And we ended our fun with a game of Tonker.

Grandparent Recount

Kia Ora,
Last week was Greats and Grands day. It was an amazing day. My whole class wrote about our Grandparents. We used Revision Assistant to fix our writing. Here it is.

“Hurray!! It’s Friday morning!”I yelled. Me, Olivia, Todd, and Kate were  going to the movies with my gran in Kerikeri! I was super excited. My gran picked us up at our house at 9:30 and off we zoomed).
It took us 20 minutes to drive to Kerikeri from our house. We all had a great talk in the car. Finally, after 20 minutes, we arrived at the movie cinemas in Kerikeri. We got out of the car as quick as Usain Bolt. I jumped over the lines by the pedestrian crossing. We walked through the door and got our tickets. My gran kindly offered to buy us something We all answered, “ No thanks”.
We sat in the movie seats and waited and waited. Finally, they turned on the movies. It took ages for the ads to finish. The movie was really good! It was about a boy who gets lost in the woods. He finds a green, hairy dragon. His name is Elliot. My Gran said it was one of the best movies ever.

Afterwards, we drove to the Bake house. My gran is really nice and she asked if we would like to have food. Heaps of food. Of course I wanted food! I love Food!! It is like I am in paradise when I am with food. I had a sausage roll and a sparkling OH! And it tasted GREAT!!! It was as yum as chocolate cake.

We ended the day at Makana Chocolate Factory! We had little chocolate boxes each. Man, our Gran is really generous.

Fishbone Diagram

Kia Ora,
Last week was Chinese language week. So we all did a native Chinese animal fishbone diagram. We had to describe the Appearance, Habitat, Diet, Classification, Reproduction and Movement of the animal. I decided to do the Red Panda. Something I enjoyed was describing its appearance. Something I could work on is making sure that the right facts go into the right box.
